(COMTEX) B: Brazil: Computer sales increase by 40% in Latin America B: Brazil: Computer sales increase by 40% in Latin America A survey by Dataquest (Gartner Group) shows that selling of personal computers in Latin American increased by 40% in the third quarter of 1999 (June - September), compared with equal period in 1998, mainly pushed by a sustained demand from Mexico. Sales in Latin America were 1.3mil units, of which 433,000 sold in Mexico (up 87%). Brazil registered sales of 351,000 units (up 19%), and Argentina 136,000 units (16% up). The good sales in Mexico were due to the adoption of non traditional distribution channels, and the alliance of Telmex and the ISP Prodigy with several computer assemblers such as Compaq, Acer, and Apple tying Internet access and acquisition of hardware and software. Compaq leads the Latin American market in 1999 Q3 with 305, 100 units sold, followed by Acer with 118,200, IBM with 103,700 units, and HP with 71,300 units. The number of servers sold in Latin America in Q3 was 38,000 units of which 32% sold in Brazil, followed by Mexico 20%, and Argentina 12%. Compaq led the servers segment with 10,200 units, while IBM led in the sales value with US$95.9mil and a 28,2% share. |
