curmudg, focus is a semiconductor design company which has been working on improving the clarity and reliability of converting the image of any desktop or laptop monitor into a television monitor. On the other side of the coin, the same chip can be used by television manufactures to hook a T.V. into a computer. The last figures I saw, these chips sell for about $18.00.

It looks like Intel and Nat'l semi intend to use these chip designs and integrate them with their graphics chips. If this happens, every computer sold will be capable of being hooked directly into a television.

This capability has been around for a number of years but has mostly been sold to the public through devices costing 90.00-300.00 dollars. I bought one such device a few years ago.

WebTV uses a separate device to basically accomplish the same thing, except you don't have the full capability of a computer system at your disposal.

Even if the price is well below 18.00, which I suspect it is, the potential market size of having your chip in every computer, coupled with a certain percentage of every television set sold is rather huge.

I believe the market will move in this direction. It remains to be seen whether Focus or someone else dominates it though. I doubt whether the graphics chip industry will sit idly by and watch an entire new opportunity for profits slip away.

I see the licensing by Intel and NSM as them simply saying to the industry. "We like this technology and think it has a future, so get hot and give us some quality products to use".
