My Syquest SparQ died last month. It would seek but never find. I had the foresight to use my CD-RW drive for backups in addition to the SparQ, so I really have lost nothing in the way of data.

I agree that CD-RW is now the way to go, especially when the price of the 4X media is now approaching $1.00 each (CompUSA everyday price is $29.95 for 25 each in bulk).

Just a thought on compressed audio using flash cards! I think it has a great future, but I also believe that there is going to be some disappointment. After the novelty wears off, I believe the consumer will still be using electro-mechanical players/recorders for applications where mechanical stress is not a consideration. An example would be the primary stereo system in a home. One CD will hold possibly 10 hours of music, and one DVD has the potential of holding one's entire collection of music. I can't see anyone wanting to be bothered with storing the flash cards on the shelf when it is so much easier to have the music stored and cataloged in the system.

I'm still in SNDK, but my sad story for 1999 is that I sold my holdings of FLSH for $7. One week later it was at $14 and now over $30. Here was my reasoning for selling. For 2 years all I heard from FLSH was press releases about "design wins" and some sort of contract with "Pharlap". The part about MicroSoft supporting the DOC didn't mean much to me. If DOC is just another "hard drive" why shouldn't MicroSoft software work with it?

Anyway, it looks like I was wrong. FLSH is doing great. My consolation is that I took a larger position in SNDK, which is not doing too badly.

Regards
