OT, I will try to keep this brief, because its Christmas Eve and you questions require a lot more than we can do here.
First of all, comparing QCOM to AOL is like comparing Intel to Yahoo. There is no comparison. QCOM is a Gorilla. It owns the enabling technology for the future of wireless. AOL is a Godzilla, which owns nothing but a giant subscriber base, lots of content, and some ad contracts. The two animals behave entirely differently. I won't go into details. You gotta read the book. Suffice it to say that I would never buy AOL again. The risk/reward is too high. QCOM's risk in the long term is very small. Its reward is huge.
Your evaluation of CDMA is dated, or colored by the opinions of the other side of the wireless battle. The general consensus is that CDMA is the future of wireless in the Amercan continents, probalby the Far East, but not in Europe, yet. You are right. Buying QCOM is betting that CDMA will be the wireless standard. Its a good bet. Please visit QCOM Coming Into Buying Range thread to learn more. (HDR, by the way, is the CDMA-based high data rate standard from QCOM.)
