How is this any more slimy than floating rumors of a false, but "positive" nature, that drive stocks up? Like the microsoft "they're going to announce a settlement today" rumor that drove it up 8 points in a day? Is it somehow OK to make up rumors as long as they make the stock go up?

Once again, you are implying that there is something UnAmerican about shorting a stock. Shorting is a natural part of the market dynamic. It is a basic part of checks and balances. You might as well attack people who have the gall to sell a stock they own! I mean, that's just not right! They're making the shares I own go down! :( (oh, but wait, if someone didnt sell, then nobody could ever buy in the first place...)
