24 DECEMBER

THE GOVERNMENT has allowed Internet service providers (ISPs) in the country to use foreign satellites for international connectivity. The department of telecommunications (DoT) will be the nodal agency for providing single window clearance to obtain bandwidth from foreign satellites.

A committee comprising officials of the department of telecom services (DTS), department of telecommunications (DoT), department of Information Technology, and the department of space (DOS) has been constituted for expeditious clearance of proposals.

committee would clear all the proposals within a period of 15 days and in any case not later than 30 days. According to a release issued by the DoT, the modalities of getting bandwidth from foreign satellites was cleared by the full telecom commission on December 22.

The guidelines for bandwidth clearance envisage that the proposed satellite access schemes and earth station specifications should be consistent with the radio regulation guidelines. The proposed satellite should be co-ordinated with the Indian administration for the frequency band of operation for the given service and the ISP gateway proposals should conform to the various govt policies as applicable from time to time.

The proforma for application, as also other details including operational requirements, are available on the DoT website ( dotindia.com ).

"With the finalisation of these modalities, the government expects that the growth of Internet in the country would receive a boost," said a DoT spokesman.
