Ask ANY IT manager of a Fortune 500 company. Sun boxes ARE that more reliable and scalable.

Maybe today, but things can change. If things never changed, for example, in the 70s, there'd be nothing but IBM mainframes out there.

And please don't compare Sun to IBM mainframes, that's like apples and oranges. :-)

Sun themselves compare the top of their line, the 10000 series servers, with mainframes:

Summary test results showed that the Sun Enterprise 10000 server and Sun StorEdge
A5100/A5200 arrays combined with Oracle8i and VERITAS Volume Manager 3.0.2
configuration:

Produced record I/O performance with 251,000 IOPS, which is consistent with the
3,000 mainframe MIPS rating of the Sun Enterprise 10000;

This back and forth can go on forever. We'll just have to see how it plays out. I do have to say that Sun worshippers sound more cocksure right now that nothing can touch their company's business, than any other collection of faithful stockholders (or groupies or camp followers I've seen).
