Good afternoon, Del. One of these days you're going to have to let me know what religion you were brought up in. I suspect it may have been some version of Protestant fundamentalism. Catholics don't believe that every word in the Bible is the literal word of God. The Bible is inspired by God, but the people writing it were human, and fallible. Further, the books of the Bible were oral for centuries, if not thousands of years, before they were finally written down.

I share your revulsion with the way that God is depicted in the passage you quote. I suspect almost everyone does. Many people have believed that God wanted them to kill people, and claimed divine inspiration, but they were wrong. It is completely antithetical to the teachings of Christ.
