"Some popular Microsoft programs require software patches to function correctly on Jan. 1. These patches are available on Microsoft's Web site, and generally take a few minutes to download. Still, Jones doesn't expect every user will go and actually download the patch - some users might not even know how to do it."

Anyone try the Microsoft fixes and see how it takes only a "few minutes"?????

MOST users don't know how to do it. Not "some".
