OT - My observation today is that many retailers are becoming less customer friendly regarding returns and purchases. Many gift certificates now require 100% of the value applied to the purchase. No cash is given in return. Where if you received a product, you can get a 100% cash refund with a receipt - in some cases - case in point:

Today I returned an unopened gift DVD, given by an aunt, to Circuit City. I had the receipt, however they only permitted me to get a store voucher - no refund. Why? Because my aunt had purchased it with a credit card. They told me they could either issue her a credit or give me a store voucher.

So, the lesson I have learned this Christmas is:

- Do not give gift certificates unless you know the recipient loves shopping at the establishment because they won't be able to cash it in. Just give them the cash so they can go where they want.

- Do not purchase gifts on a credit card - use cash.

- Do not make gift purchases online unless there is a local establishment that will accept the returns - or would you prefer to explain to your nephew's parents how to return his defective item (the one you received at the last frantic minute) to Amazon.com. <ggg>

- I personally will never shop at Circuit City again, and will request to family members not to shop there for anyone.

- I will never buy another gift certificate from Target or Best Buy because they won't give you cash as change for a certificate purchase. I spent $35 of a $50 gift certificate purchase at Target and they refused to give me the balance in cash, rather they gave me another voucher for $15.

Consumers need to take a stand and expose these unfair practices.
