In fact gold and platinum are found together in many locations, although in platinum country the gold is not generally too high and vice-versa. But, in California, in some of the placer areas (the Ross for one), plentiful gold rich veins cut gabbros which are known to also host sulphide veins which are rich in platinum. In the old days this white gold was thrown away, as it value was not recognized. In the Tulameen area of BC, the platinum was economic and plentiful as was the gold You don't find it everywhere but it does occur. In the mines of Sudbury gold is an important byproduct along with the platinoid minerals. In most primary quartz veins platinum is rare or a very small byproduct of the gold. Osmium causes trouble with gold smelting and palladium can be see colouring the nitric used to dissolve the silver inquarts. In Beardmore some quartz veins that had nickel copper in them in porphyry blebs ran gold and platinum. Again, that was rare.

I would not doubt it in general but as in all stories from gold camps it calls for careful testing. there are as many liars as there are gold mines and perhaps more.
