I hope your relatives in teaching are in good strong unions, but probably not if they are afraid of being accused. I am. I say exactly what I damned well please and never touch anyone. My employer is obligated by our union contract to pay (unlimited) legal fees to defend me from any charge arising from my employment. My union carries a million dollar liability insurance contract to protect me and enrich the little brutes if they charge me with some loathsome offense. In addition, I have my own liability policy to pick up anything over the top.
I had a colleague who was sued for rape and sexual harassment by a student and won with the aid of the lawyer hired by the university (after the union sued the university and made them pay). He countersued the student for libel, abuse of process, and general ugliness and was awarded $350,000 (but the woman was judgment proof). I would never teach in any school without this kind of protection.
Moreover, without a union, the bosses will destroy anyone who is not their toady or slave.
