UPS COMPLETES ONE-MILLIONTH TRANSACTION ON ORACLE(R) INTERNET PROCUREMENT WORLD'S LARGEST PACKAGE DISTRIBUTION COMPANY SAVES 25% IN Procurement Costs With Oracle Internet Procurement
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Dec 27, 1999 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- (http://www.oracle.com/tellmemore/?134005) Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq: ORCL), the number one choice for e-business, today announced that United Parcel Service (UPS), has processed its one-millionth transaction on their 13,000-user Oracle(R) Internet Procurement solution. The Internet-based system has allowed UPS to consolidate and fully automate procurement for more than $10 billion annually in non-production purchases, resulting in a reduction of the procure-to-pay lifecycle of 25 percent, or 10 hours per person per week. UPS has also successfully reduced requisition processing from six weeks to five-to-seven days.
Each year, UPS ships more than three billion packages and documents through a global network that uses more than 500 aircrafts, 157,000 vehicles and 1,700 facilities to provide service in over 200 countries and territories. UPS relies on technology to maintain efficiency, to keep prices competitive, and to provide new value added customer services.
UPS had two key criteria for procurement; the system had to allow connection of their large and decentralized organization together via the Internet and enable the consolidation of all purchasing processes across the enterprise.
"The Oracle procurement suite is the backbone of a key procurement process at UPS that provides direct connectivity to leverage vendor relationships and streamline invoice processing," said Jack Busche, UPS vice president of procurement. "Just last month, we hit the one million mark on processed requisitions from more than 13,000 users, a demonstration of the successful consolidation of our purchasing process and reduced redundancies."
"The challenge for UPS is one of sheer size," said Barry Lacy, vice president of IS at UPS. "Oracle Internet Procurement offered UPS the chance to take advantage of the maturing Internet to connect a very decentralized company of more than 326,000 employees worldwide. Now, we can leverage the information stored in our automated system for more efficient purchase decisions."
Prior to implementing Oracle, UPS had a fragmented procurement system. Each of the company's operating districts and regions had separate financial centers that processed purchasing transactions and maintained individual vendor relationships with 70,000 separate vendors. Since deploying Oracle Internet Procurement, UPS has been able to shrink its 84 processing locations to 1 main financial center and 12 satellite locations. New automated purchasing processes for items such as furniture have allowed UPS to eliminate paper-based purchase orders entirely, and the cycle time has gone from as long as two weeks to just a few hours.
