GO QCOM: I think that Kyocera's willingness to maintain the QCOM brand name was one of the more compelling reasons for QCOM to accept their offer. It never made sense to me that MOT or NOK would ever have the guts to admit that QCOM was making better cell phones. As much as I hoped to get the positive reinforcement from NOK, I think the deal with Kyocera cemented the position of Japan and the rest of Asia to CDMA. Europe will still be patching up their GSM networks for another couple years before they convert to a CDMA air interface. In the meantime, Kyocera will be the largest CDMA cell phone manufacturer in Japan and North America. I wonder what will happen to QCOM's plans to open manufacturing facilities in Mexico and Brazil.
