Viewed as a whole, Microsoft has given its users the most labor-intensive computing architecture ever devised; it makes a joke of the term automation.

Take a look at Windows 2000. A few things you'll find:

- WSH. Windows Scripting Host provides native support for VBScript and JScript. Perl, Rexx, Python, and others are available as well.

- WMI. Windows Management Instrumentation allows you to "read the meter" of almost anything running on the box, and tweak as desired.

- ADSI. Active Directory Scripting Interface allows you to read/write programatically from ADSI-compliant directories (Active Directory, Exchange 5.5, etc.).

These were all available in NT4 - but have been enhanced greatly in Windows 2000, and are installed by default.
