Metromedia International Explores the Sale of Assets

Metromedia International Group is exploring a sale of all or some of the company's entertainment assets, according to people familiar with the situation.

Among the scenarios under consideration is a sale of the company's film library to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., the Hollywood studio acquired last year by a group including billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian. The 2,200-title Metromedia library includes films from Orion Pictures, Samuel Goldwyn Co. and the Motion Picture Corporation of America. Among its titles are the films "Dances with Wolves" and "Silence of the Lambs."

Metromedia has also explored transactions with other buyers in which the whole of its film companies, not just the libraries, would be sold, according to those familiar with the situation.

Metromedia also has a telecommunications business that is creating systems in Eastern Europe, Russia and China.

A spokesman for MGM declined to comment. Metromedia could not be reached.
