*OT* A different view of Christmas:

Double Standards & the New Rating Systems

You may want to hit the ignore button or move on to the next post for I am moving on to the soap box once again. Things are not equal and I can not remain silent. Maybe it would be better for me to post that I think I have some observation that I would like to make public, but better that you see it in private at your own request. Here is my latest paradox.

A retailer that we frequent sales magazines, CD?s, computer type games & video?s. They also sell Playboys & Penthouse magazines. These products are behind the counter and not in public view. You must be 18 to purchase. And I would like to add that our community staged a protest because of this and the store did not back down. I support the management?s decision? Please hold this thought.

For Christmas I purchased for my son a couple of their new gift certificates which in reality are Debit cards. I thought it a pretty nifty marketing gimmick. Well as expected today he requested that I haul his butt to the store so he could redeem his treasure.

On the way I asked him what was it that he wanted to purchase and he replied a couple of music CD?s. So when we walked through the front doors there before us was a display with the hottest CD?s of the month. He grabbed one up quickly and said that it was his favorite and the one he wanted. The cover stated that nobody under 18 could purchase and had many subsequent warnings. See where I?m going here. Why can they or anyone else display product that can not be purchased by anyone younger than 18 and have to keep the Playboy?s under lock and key. The paradox!!!

Well if there were 50 CD?s on the display there was only one rated PG. I immediately told him that I could not allow him to purchase the CD?s he wanted. He proclaimed that I was not being fair & that had he been with his Mother, Brother or Grand Mother he would already be in the truck carrying his treasure to the Casa. The second paradox!!!

So then we moved on to Video Games and the same scenario prevailed. If we are gonna let society dictate the ratings on product that is available to our children then I think it is only proper and fair that they are placed on the shelf space next to our Playboys or vice versa. This battle has been in the courts for 40 years, what is the difference?

What are your thoughts on my apparent dilemma? Would you prefer that I form a new thread were I can express my social views? This clearly has nothing to do with AIM. FWIW.

Keith
