SGI Japan To Launch Graphic Contents Provider

TOKYO (Nikkei)--SGI Japan Ltd. will spin off its graphic contents division and set up a company specializing in creating movies and video games.

Silicon Studio Ltd., to be launched Jan. 1, 2000, aims to cash in on SGI's advanced digital technology for entertainment. In addition, the new company will offer systems integration services. It will target 3 billion yen in sales in 2000.

The new company will be capitalized at 210 million yen, and company employees will hold a more than 40% stake.

SGI Japan will have a 19% stake in Silicon Studio. Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. will own just less than 10% of the new firm's shares, while CSK Corp. (9737) and Sumisho Electronics Co. (7556) each have 5%. Creek and River, Namco Ltd. (9752), Gaga Communications Inc. and CRC Research Institute Inc. (9660) have each just over 2%.

SGI Japan's computer-aided design and computer graphics divisions will remain within the company.
