Amy, RE: An IT person from one of the top datafarm co.s publicly said Win2000 has made significant improvements to the NT platform. The key question is: how much improvement and is it enough? He seemed to think it was a good, solid product. Check this out: zdnet.com Basically, the review says that most people should upgrade from NT 4.0 to Win2000 primarily due to Active Directory's enhancement of system management. Not too much is dedicated to the Linux et al vs Win200 contest, but I did take note of one of the comments by reviewer Pankaj Chowdhry: "There's no way Active Directory can compete with the pedigrees of Novell and Sun directory services." Seems like Sun will remain the most popular choice for the mission critical game in spite of Microsoft's marketing. Just from checking the anecdotal evidence from the people I speak with and reading stuff like the above, my guess is that Win2000 will stem some of the market share loss that NT 4.0 had been experiencing in the server area to the various Unix flavors, including Linux, but it won't take any share back.
