You're exactly right. During the Asian Contagian meltdown, consumer sentiment numbers plummeted along with the market even though nothing material really affected the economy (i.e. higher unemployment, etc...). IMHO, it proves the wealth effect is playing a large part in the growth of this economy. If we should ever see a long term market decline in our lifetimes, this economy will stop dead in its tracks.

i have seen an LT consumer confidence chart (sorry can't link it) that correlates consumer confidence with the stock market. the number released today is indeed ominous.
