More on EMC and NAS.........

A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc.
Equity Research - Technology
December 27, 1999

I was pleased to read that EMC
is moving big-time to compete in low-end
network attached storage (NAS) next year:

[...]
On December 13, we hosted EMC CEO Michael
Ruettgers on the Edward's Information
Network (EIN). Mr. Ruettgers noted that
in addition to the market
opportunities of traditional high-end
RAID storage and the new midrange storage
opportunity (from its acquisition of Data
General), it sees a third area of
growth in the network attached storage
(NAS) market. The NAS market is
particularly attractive, as this market
is taking off before the SAN market and
its leader, Network Appliance, has been
able to post 90%-type growth rates
recently. Although EMC does compete in
this market currently with its high-end
Celerra, EMC will aggressively attack
this market in the low-end late next
year using NUMA technology from its Data
General acquisition. IDC recently
released results based on the first three
quarters of 1999 for the NAS market
as follows:
1998 Share 1999 Share
Network Appliance 41.4% 45.9%
Auspex 22.4% 10.7%
Compaq 13.7% 8.0%
EMC 7.9% 18.2%
(now #2 and growing faster than NTAP)
