Got a stock tip advising me to pick up ALL (Allstate Insurance) as a potential buyout candidate. Have a hard time getting excited about this one, but will watch it for a while. The recent change in federal banking laws puts insurance companies up for grabs by banks, I think. A stock guru on CNBC this a.m. mentioned he liked insurance companies better than banks right now.

IFMX , the technology leader in the software infrastructure for the i.Economy, and Computerized Thermal Imaging (CTI) COII announced a multi-year agreement for the Informix Internet Foundation.2000(TM) database to provide support for CTI's revolutionary breast cancer imaging system, which will be deployed across the Internet and in hospitals worldwide.
CTI's system will combine proprietary algorithms and the Informix Internet Foundation.2000 database as the framework for a centralized Internet warehouse, which will store thousands of secure patient records, accessed by physicians, insurance companies and medical administrators.
Under the agreement, CTI will use Informix's Internet Foundation.2000 in both the stand-alone unit installed in hospitals, and for an Internet based warehouse of thermal images. To guarantee patient privacy and to ensure continuous availability, only the raw medical data is centralized. Once deployed, the system will use Internet connectivity to let doctors access medical data.
"We see Computer Thermal Imaging's system as an early example of a new kind of application," said Steve Weick, Informix, senior vice president. "What makes it different is that the data it manages is not entered like traditional business data, using a keyboard. Rather, it is recorded using other electronic devices, like digital cameras or microphones. "We don't just draw pictures on a screen," explained Lynn Satterthwaite, V.P. of Engineering for CTI. "The thermal image data we capture goes through some very complex algorithms before anything is shown to the radiologist or the patient. Doing this kind of processing over the volumes of data we deal with requires a fast and scalable data management foundation. But more than that, it requires a framework that helps us to improve our algorithms with more research, and to be flexible about how we apply the algorithms to the data."
CTI is seeking FDA approval for the use of the Computerized Thermal Imaging System as an adjunctive diagnostic test to the mammogram and clinical examination for the detection of breast cancer. The system uses a sophisticated heat sensitive camera to record thermal images of breast tissue, which are processed by proprietary computer algorithms.
The test is simple, painless and involves no radiation, breast compression, electrodes, electrical current or skin contact. It should significantly reduce the number of breast biopsies that turn out to be benign each year. The company currently has FDA trials underway at Providence Hospital, Washington, D.C.; Mt. Sinai Cancer Center, Miami Beach, Fla.; USC/Norris Cancer Center, Los Angeles; St.Agnes Hospital, Baltimore; and Lahey Clinic, Peabody, Mass.
