My post yesterday was intended to yank a few chains(I mean that in a nice way), I see it worked. <g> I do have a few comments on your post. You said:

As a result of it, MicroSoft Basic became the de facto standard programming language for (then-called) microcomputers. That is the most fundamental reason why MicroSoft came to dominate the (now-called) personal computer market.

I recall the times differently. When I worked on microcomputers (pre-anything IBM made). It was assembler language and later we turned to 'C' on the Z80 based CP/M based machines. Maybe when you're referring to MS Basic as king you mean for hobbyists. The assembler we used was called M80 as in Microsoft 8080 assembler. In those day (1980, 81) Microsoft was king of the programming languages and Digital Research was king of operating systems in the microcomputer world. I disagree with your statement that
[MS Basic]... is the most fundamental reason why MicroSoft came to dominate the (now-called) personal computer market.

True, it allowed them to survive at the time but it was the agreement with IBM to supply the 16 bit OS (DOS) that started them on the path to monopoly. Up to that point they were considered to be a programming language company. DR was the OS company.

The idea here is basically the same. If Inprise's products become the standard for Linux development, Inprise will become a huge financial success ... and it could happen.

I agree that porting all of their tools to linux is a great move. My understanding is that linux has made huge inroads in the server market. I don't see it as a desktop system yet.

Regards

Tom
