Lets educate or bring our fellow thread mate into the 21st century. Jon a post from Yahoo is where you should start, imho. If you watch LII screens along with the time and sales you'll notice that very often the MM activity causes the selling rather than vice versa. However, some argue that MM's merely fulfill the "house" function of order matching and they just wish to make the spread on a stock. That may be the case on many stocks but on the high flier stocks they end up getting caught short and have no choice but to drive the price back down so they can cover before allowing the stock to rocket again. And how often do we see the same MM on the inside bid and offer just scalping the spread. NEVER. They're either on the buy side or the offer depending on which way they want the stock to go. The most obvious evidence is to watch afterhours trading and how much it differs from the regular market. Afterhours is relatively free of manipulation (although that is changing damnit!) and the difference in trading activity is obvious if you trade both sessions like I do. Given the above and much more, I think you'd have to have your head in the sand to believe that MM's don't have an interest in manipulating stock price movements to their advantage.
