200,000 seems very over estimated ..

Perhaps if you counted every variation that a polymorphic critter could do then perhaps ...

As far as blocking e-mail over a two day period ... not..

Viruses that are intended to cause damage on 1/1/00 have already been released and are intended to be in place by then. They are just waiting for the trigger date to show up. That would be how they would get the most bang for the effort.

Within this context, I have to wonder about the latest version of AOL. I understand that thousands of people have had major problems with their systems after trying to upgrade to it. I personally had to untangle two machines, so far, from that upgrade. Both machines had viruses on them. The question that comes to my mind is where did they come from ..

Symptoms: machine worked fine .. then lotsa stuff stopped working when the user tried to upgrade to the latest AOL.

The upgrade process stopps midstream when the latest version of Internet Explorer for AOL is being loaded. The result is that areas of the machine are no longer functioning properly. When a uninstall is then attempted, the upgrade process had not saved the "old version" information. result ==== no former version to revert to .. sorry Charlie, no can do.

It may be nothing .. but I would have a hard time finding a better place to stick a critter than in a AOL upgrade.

For what it's worth ..
