CPU modem simulation has no effect on Amati

This idea is for PC makers who want to save money. They figure
that once the Pentium chips have become powerful enough, they
can use software to replace the most expensive chips found on
modem cards. Usually it's the Rockwell modem chips that are
being replaced. You still need a modem card for other functions
such as the tranceiver, etc. But nevertheless PC makers can
shave off another $20-40 from their costs. For a modem card,
this is a lot (almost half of the manufacturer's cost of a modem)
of money being saved. The analogy is similar to
using the CPU to provide a software based MPEG function compared
to paying for an extra MPEG card with MPEG chip. In that case
you save a hundred dollars or more. But of course the CPU based
MPEG quality is not as good. All professionals use hardwired MPEG
chips instead of CPU software based ones.

Keep in mind when you use the CPU for modem functions you are
using up to 30% of its resources. It's a cheap man's modem
solution. You would never buy such a modem card. These are
in systems such as Packard Bell's, Compaq's, and more for
towards the low end. I don't think Jim Wilkinson is going
to wait around until the CPU is powerful enough to easily
handle ADSL while using only less than 30% of its resources
and at a price point of the CPU that makes it economically
feasible. Jim wants his DMT now.

And I want Amati to move up now. What's become of last weeks
tour de force of Boston and New York presentation? I think
it fell on deaf ears.
