What about consumer inventory? Every consumer I know is stocking up on staples this month. A case of toilet paper here, extra laundry detergent there. Retailers are bumping up inventory to meet this demand, and to make sure they have plenty of inventory. After Y2K comes and nothing happens, consumers will use up their excess inventory before purchasing more. As a result it will take awhile before stores need to re-order due to the fact that they have an ample inventory. By the time this gets back to the raw materials level the effect could be quite pronounced.
