Mike,

I compare the infrastructure providers to the merchants selling overalls to the Gold Rush prospectors. Most of the prospectors went bust, but the merchants offering a trustworthy service prospered. Some guy named Levi made a fortune that way (g).

Infrastructure tools have natural barriers to entry, as the buyers want to hear about reliability, portability, scalability, standards support, sophistication and number of installed sites. This is true even after they stop being "child's play" -- relational databases have been around for a while, but Oracle still makes good money at them. They won the portability, reliability and scalability contest.

I make no comment about the mass illusion that is Amazon.com (g)
