I have used the free services. Alta Vista is good. However, I would not recommend them to someone who uses the net a great deal. You can overcome the bumps by getting in the habit of accessing the alta vista window every 15 or 20 minutes. For me it has improved since it was first offered. Also some of its problems are the same as regular ISPs, bumping and busy lines. If you stay on for long periods of time you are better off paying for a good ISP that doesn't bump. If you just use it an hour a day Alta Vista might be for you.
