PITTSBURGH, Dec 28 (Reuters) - AT&T Corp. said on Tuesday that Pittsburgh's City Council voted 6-1, with one abstention, to approve a new 10-year cable franchise agreement with its cable division.

The non-exclusive agreementwhich entails an upgraded cable system, is the result of more than a year of negotiations, which included two public hearings.

AT&T Cable Services is investing $40 million in the City of Pittsburgh, and $300 million in the region to deploy an upgraded fiber-optic based cable system.

AT&T is offering local telephone service over the cable system in some communities outside of the City of Pittsburgh, and will begin introduction of the service in the City, in some areas by fourth quarter of 2000.
