Sprint Workers Set Strike Deadline

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A midnight Thursday strike deadline loomed for thousands of Sprint employees in six states as contract talks remained stalled between the workers' union and the telecommunications company.

Communications Workers of America negotiators have in talks with Sprint Corp. representatives for months in North Carolina, Florida, Tennessee, Virginia, Oregon and Indiana ... About 3,500 workers, or 14 percent of Sprint's work force are affected, Matthews said. They are currently working without a contract.

CWA employees who are threatening to strike all work in local phone operations and are mainly installers, repairmen and technicians, with a few operators, he said ... CWA representatives said a strike would slow repairs, but otherwise not affect phone service ...
