JVC shows set-top for satellite service

Newport Beach, Calif. - JVC Co. of America (Elmwood, N.J.) last week gave a sneak preview of its first digital set-top for the satellite broadcast service of Echostar Communications Corp.

Echostar's service, which will be called Sky, is expected to boast the largest channel capacity in the U.S. digital satellite market once a partnership with Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. is completed this summer, forming a network that combines the two companies' seven satellites.

JVC will build and market Echostar's satellite decoders on the open market, and will launch three models in June, with prices ranging from $699.95 to $999.95. They will come with varying features, including a local TV link, a high-speed data port for Internet connections for PCs, caller ID and a VCR timer.
