Korean Telecom Firms Target China's Lucrative CDMA Market

December 29, 1999 (SEOUL) -- Korean telecom companies are engaging in a highly competitive bidding race to win China's CDMA project covering as many as 4 million telephone lines in the latter half of 2000.
In a move to support domestic firms, the Korean government dispatched a team from its economic bureau to China. The team started diplomatic talks with Chinese government officials Dec. 27 in Beijing.
A total of 13 multinational firms, including groups with Samsung, Hyundai and LG companies, are expected to bid for the project. Also, telecom giants such as Motorola Inc., Lucent Technologies Inc., Ericsson and NEC Corp. are likely to participate in the bidding.
Korea's three major telecom-equipment companies are in talks with firms in China to set up a local joint venture to help build market share in the early-phase market.
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has a 28.5 percent share of the global CDMA handset market, followed by 18.1 percent and 10.3 percent for LG Information & Communications Ltd. and Hyundai Electronics Industries Co., Ltd., respectively, according to a 1998 survey by Dataquest, a U.S.-based research firm.
