B: Lucent claims ten times speed increase for Internet traffic with new all-optical router

DEC 30, 1999, M2 Communications - Lucent Technologies has introduced a high-capacity, all-optical router that it says is capable of directing ten times the traffic of today's Internet per second.

The WaveStar LambdaRouter uses a series of microscopic mirrors to
instantly direct and route optical signals from fibre to fibre in the
network, without first converting them to electrical form as is
currently done.

The first release of WaveStar LambdaRouter will be available to
select customers in July 2000, offering more than 10Tb/s of total
switching capacity. The system will be commercially available in
December 2000.
