Frank- There is a little bit of confusion and FUD here.

SONET/SDH framing is a valuable container for data payload
and just because it is "SONET/SDH framed" does not mean that
it has to go thru SONET/SDH TDM Multiplexers,
ie. your traditional Add-Drop Multiplexers, ADMs. There is a lot in the SONET/SDH frame that is of value. In Ciscos
OC-192c Packet-Over-SONET, router-to-router demonstration
cross-country on Qwests infrastructure, that was all optical
and it never crossed an ADM. Of course, there are NO ADMs
that can take an OC-192c and Mux it up to higher rates.

Then, the next-gen 10Gigether stuff that is being worked on
may have SONET/SDH framing in the wide area but that is not
clear yet.
