The reason I mentioned the Brooklyn Tabernacle tape was because I think anyone watching the video would recognize the hand of God all over it. It's not just music, but testimonies of deliverance and true freedom in Christ. One man who was an alcoholic testified that he would just happen to sit outside the church many times to sober out. One day as he described it, he heard this music that was "heavenly" coming from inside the church. He went in, all smelly and washed out and came out all clean and washed within. Who put in his mind that the music was "heavenly"?

You can't go wrong singing Psalms and if that is your sole choice, then so be it. However, there is Godly music out there created by Godly people. You might consider reading some of the lyrics that Pastor Cymbala's wife writes (as she writes many of the songs, with no formal musical education).
Songs such as "He's Been Faithful" of which I've yet to meet someone who was not inwardly moved upon hearing. This is by no means to lift man up, but rather that God anoints music apart from Psalms also.
