Greetings Rande!

I think you're right on target with this analysis. This has been "in the cards", so to speak, for the past 4 years. Yeltsin has been merely a figure head. However, his political opponents have been surprised at his "staying" power. I have a feeling that he and they have always been on the same side however.

I suspect we'll see a new union just as you've pointed out.

I think the US is in a very tenuous position. The "friendship" we have had with the Russians is very superficial. They will use us to build their arsenal as long as we will allow it. We have essentially relieved their economic concerns so that they (the ones in power) can concentrate their resources on their military goals.

Furthermore, I suspect there is much more to their alliance with China than we can even begin to imagine.

Yes, we are in a very precarious position indeed.
