OK, I have sensitized you about optical/electrical, SONET/SDH, DWDM etc. There are others that have propagated the confusion as well. Lets go back to SONET/SDH framing--You realize that that has nothing to do with anything in the pure optical domain BUT, the recipients of the SONET/SDH framed payloads may indeed interpret the overhead to do a variety of things, Automatic Protection Switching as an example. That does NOT have to be done at some TDM ADM you realize. APS can be done by the Path terminating station which very well could be a router/switch that handles the data payload
