Here's the deal- Highschool Advanced Placement teaches C++ because that's what the national AP test is on. It sounds like missy sonki's school is breaking out of the Washingto DC loop and is offering Java as an alternative to doing the AP thing and learning C++.

C++ isn't the best learning language in the world, and may actually be the worst. It's so '5 years ago' that C++ is what's being prescribed by HS AP by the feds.

The best language is probably Python. The most USEFUL language would probably be Java. There are many many many C++ programmers scrambling to learn Java. There are few, no, none going from Java to C++.

That link I passed to you twister showed that the WriteOnceRunAnywhere promise of Java is showing up now in a big way on the server side and moving toward the client side. Java is more than a language. It's a movement.
