That's akin to what I stated earlier, "through the use of an applique." If you redirect or split the beam of the subject stream and send one of them into a test device that was fully SONET compliant, as required, you could then use this common O-E-O unit and the standalone "SONET channel unit" to read overhead bytes of individual streams, ad hoc. That's what I meant by "breaking out."

I'd still like to get something more definitive on this. Strange, that they don't have a white paper or a better description on the topic. Unless, like we have both surmised, even if only hyopthetically, they are actually doing full o-e (Okay, O-E-O) conversions on every interfa$e.
