I am going to write this so that more than just yourself will benefit. My wife prints these posts out for my children to read.

I think the biggest problem I encounter with the Old Testament and even the New is that the ORDER is all screwed up.

I do not know if you know this but the New Testament and Old are ordered in similar ways. Before the printing press the different books where just that " Different BOOKS "

Old Testament:
1 The books of the Law ( 5 books attributed to Moses )
2 History ( Joshua - Esther )
3 Poetry or Wisdom? ( Job - Solomon )
4 Major Prophets ( Isaiah - Daniel )
5 Minor Prophets ( Hosea - Malachi )

New Testament:

1. Gospels ( see a Similarity )
2. History ( Acts )
3. Letters of Paul ( Romans - Phil ) [ Hebrews is disputed ]
4. Letters of Others ( Hebrews - Jude )
5. Prophecy ( Revelation )

Here are some tid bits.

Most people think Genesis was the first written but Job was the first.

1&2 Samuel and 1&2 Kings used to be all called Kings in 4 books.

Ezra and Nehemiah were a single book that was later split.

The letters in the New Testament are all ordered by size not date so it is very confusing.

The whole Bible is not in chronological order so everyone gets confused at first.

To understand Ezekiel you need to know the dating of the things predicted and when they were predicted.

These 3 prophets lived at the same time.

Daniel , Jeremiah, and Ezekiel.

All three are recognized as "Major Prophets"

Ezekiel's Vision is topped by none.

I did not ask where you fall in the various schools of Eschatology ( Study of last things )

There are about a half dozen different ones... Let me try and get them.

First the "Millennium" ( Not Y2K ) is generally a doctrine of a 1000 year reign with satan bound found in Revelation 20

There is first 3 main schools

Pre-Millennialism Pre= Before & Mil = 1000 (years)
Amillennialism A= no or not. As in the word Amuse A = not Muse = think or Not-thinking. Amused? :-}
PostMillennial Post = After. as in Post War etc. after the war.

Premillennialists expect Jesus to come back and be seated on David's Throne on earth ( Crucial stuff even in Ezekiel ) and thus the term "PRE" = Before The second coming in their system is before the 1000 year golden age and sees a literal throne on earth with Christ Judging with a "Rod of Iron".

Then Premillennial can be split into "Dispensational Premil" or Historic Premil called Chialism ( Latin )

Then Amillennialists believe the 1000 years to be spiritual or seen only in the Church but generally deny that any age on earth will be under the Rule of Christ on earth when peace etc exists.

They two can be split into three groups.. Historical Amil - those who believe that the resurrection and second coming is yet future but no Golden age outside of the Church.
Those who believe in the "March of the Gospel" that every nation will at one time be Christian but not all at the same time. And the Amil Full Preterist.

Preterist is a term that refers to believing it has already been fulfilled. So this group believes that their is no 1000 year golden age on earth. No restoration of Israel as a Nation under God. That ALL Bible Prophecy including the second coming and resurrection are passed as prophesied of in scripture.

PostMils believe that the throne of David is in heaven at the right hand of God but the 1000 year Kingdom ( not literal but meaning long ) is here on earth! I believe that.
They believe that all the nations get converted eventually and then Israel finally gets provoked to jealousy and the Holy Spirit and the Gospel are poured out on them the same way as it happened in Ezekiel AGAIN.

Then Postmil can also be broken up into two main groups...

They all believe that the Kingdom of Christ will slowly increase throughout history and culminate in a Golden Age when Israel will finally receive her king and the whole world will Rule under the perfect laws of God.
One group believe that the general apostasy ( Loosing of Satan ) happens before the Golden age under the church of Rome and the Golden age really gets going after the 1260 year period from the cross = 1295 AD when Boniface 8th was in power. This view is the "Historical Postmil View" They believe the Pope is the Harlot drunk on the wine of the Blood of the Slain Saints and the Anti-Christ.

The other Postmil view is Preterist Postmil. This is where I sit. They believe that MUCH of the prophecies that people are waiting to see fulfilled are already finished. When Jesus said "this generation" he meant within 40 years. Most of Matthew 24 speaks of the Destruction of Israel in Judgement. Nero is the Anti-Christ and the Abomination of Desolation that was to tip off that the elect should get out "Quick" not even going back into the house for their coats. His entering and defiling the "Holy Place" = Temple was the key to see that all respect for the Judaic religion in Rome?s eyes was gone. However this group still expects the Second coming and the general resurrection in the future on the very last day. The earth is "melted with a fervent heat"( Judgement ) at the glorious coming of the Lord.

The problem most people have with my view is that it allows for immediate fulfilling and yet for some elements that are spoken to be yet future but I do not EVER EVER EVER advocate those who buy into double or triple fulfillment of prophecy. Prophecy can "foreshadow" another event even as the destruction of the temple in Daniel?s Day as a "type or shadow or pattern" but not multiple fulfilments. Better to be wrong than to spread that. God speaks very specifically when He speaks through Prophets about future events. They are not vague or general.

I believe that Revelations talks very much to the generation that then lived about the things that would happen but it is not limited to that period only. Last two chapters are about the eternal state. 3rd last chapter about future events. Also Matthew 24 et al about both the destruction of the temple and some things about the end of the world. Also Ezekiel "MUST" be set up in the same manner to see all that Ezekiel prophesied.

Why have I said all that!?!

Because what most people do it start from one of those "systems" and then try to see how to fit the book of Ezekiel into it! That is Apriori exegesis and it is very dangerous. Instead of letting the scriptures speak to you by the spirit you intellectually manage to stuff almost everything into your system.

So most people who look at Ezekiel who are of a "Futurist" group looking to all things fulfilled in the future will completely misunderstand Ezekiel.

They place the ALL of the prophecies into the time of the new covenant under Christ and will either say they did not apply to Ezekiel?s day at all or they will say they have a double fulfillment. WRONG !

Very little of Ezekiel is yet unfulfilled but just enough to let us know it was a PATTERN

======= This is critical = PATTERN or Shadow ======

Everyone will agree that the old covenant ceremonial law was a pattern to show Jesus. The Passover being the blood of the lamb etc. etc. etc. The destruction of Israel and Judah in Jeremiah's day however is also a PATTERN for the future of Israel.

This one is getting long so I will get back to you right away.
