Year 2000: The Year of INPR

"Finally, the buildout of business-grade Internet services and the proliferation of smart appliances that connect to the Web will put a fantastic strain on the creaking infrastructure of HTML Web sites. Software vendors such as Inktomi (INKT) will have a chance to extend their business by acquiring even younger infrastructure companies such as Akamai (AKAM) to provide a suite of software that can make the Web more reliable.

As they make the Web more reliable, new business-to-business companies will arise to take advantage of that infrastructure, possibly even pushing aside established B2B players such as Ariba (ARBA). Other companies such as Phone.com (PHCM) and Inprise (INPR), the former Borland Software, will be making a business developing the software glue that will let smart phones and PDAs access the Web as Ericsson (ERICY) helps Omnipoint (OMPT) and other wireless vendors test General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), a higher-speed wireless Internet connection."
