Thanks for the link.....our LAN is NT-based. I have tried it at home, but found it's limited support of various peripherals the home PC owner is more apt to have, is too much of a negative.
NT is a pain in the arse, it lulls the unsuspecting into a false sense of security. Why put up with it if it is not "secure" right? It is arguably "the best" in certain areas, but far from perfect as I am sure you will agree.
I get a kick out of the hype surrounding Linux.....people who have driven the stocks to incredible heights might wonder WHAT it is they bought if they ever tried to install it on their home PC. In no way is Linux "The" answer, maybe there is no swiss army knife "answer". It's obvious there is room for improvement on all fronts.
I believe eventually people will realize their usage of PCs as "glorified typewriters" does not justify supporting myriad industries whose bait is the promise of NEW AND BETTER. The media drummers want to convince people the distinctions in specialized applications is narrowing. They want people to believe the PC will be more of an "appliance".
My response; TV is better suited to 90% of what marketing wants to convince people they need a PC for. "Web TV" is the closest thing to a recipe for the perfect consumer product....that's not enough though, they want people to buy contrivances they can't understand, to do things they weren't designed for.
The larger a company becomes, the less apt they are to provide an innovative solution to anything. Linux will (IMHO) eventually alienate both the enthusiasts and it's more mainstream prospective buyers in attempting to mass market a product that is clearly not meant for everybody.
We'd all love to see Goliath bite the dust, but MS got where it is by being wonderfully mediocre in all aspects, and an extreme amount of LUCK!
Gee, that was about 3 cents worth! I do tend to ramble on the subject! |
