I run Win NT Worstation on my home computer. I had it installed on a Pentium II when they first came out. The Pentium II and Win NT were made for each other. Win 95 did not run as fast with the Pentium II. Additionally, AMD's K-6 ran about as fast as the Pentiumn II with Win 95. So, to make the Pentium II pay for itself--and to avoid AMD--I matched NT with the Pentium II.

At first, NT balked at a variety of things. I was careful about what I would buy. NT drivers were hard to find for peripherals. Some drivers did not exist period. It did not like a variety of programs either. I had it installed with SP 2 on it. I bypassed SP 3 because many thought it created more problems than it fixed. Finally, I added SP 5 to it and it is now chummy with everything I use.

I was apprehensive when I had it installed in 1997 but the program has been good to me. From time to time an application will freeze or go crazy because of something I do. However, NT has let me kill the temperamental application without crashing itself. In over 2.5 years, I think NT crashed on its own about 2 times. Even then, I may have just given up on it too quickly when it was running task manager.

I read an article on Linux a few months ago about how it will compete with MSFT. I am always looking for an alternative to MSFT. All the article pointed out was a variety of shortcomings in Linux.

Win 2000 is growing into an enormous pig. I thought that they would provide a Workstation version but at this point I will be running NT indefinitely.
