Personally, my favorite celebrations of the New Year have been with the people I love rather than at a function or even a party. So many of the parties have had a sad feeling, a wistfulness, and an undernote of desperation masked by alcohol.

Boston used to do a lovely First Night, but I haven't been there for the turn of the new year in quite a long time.
