The other day I was driving along when I noticed that PacBell had large orange reels along the street, so I pulled over and asked one of the workers what they were doing. He told me it was pull conduit for fiber optic cable. It looks like PacBell is quietly following BLS' lead and pulling FTTC even though the direct intent is to provide a package of services including DirectTV following the Att model. There is no way they could get that much stuff over copper circuits.

On the surface this looks negative for ATHM, but it is negative for Att and constructive for ATHM because ATHM delivers to the headend or to the FCO, Fiber Central Office. It is also a tacit admission that DSL can't compete with cable or at least Pure, since we must give up this notion of cable as a unique delivery when telcos pull Pure. Cable in the MSO sense is trumped by FTTC, or FTTx.

Does PacBell need to allow @Home access to their FCO? They do if OA becomes the law or standard of the land. Anyway it would be in PacBell's interest to carry @Home because like AOL, and MSPG-ELNK, @Home is one of the largest ISPs. If PacBell pulls this off quickly, other BOCs and telcos MUST follow suit immediately.

The question for you is: what could comprise the definition of FCO?

There are many topics buried in the implications of this post. Perpend.
