~~~~OT~~~~ Stephen, I am not a climber but a hiker so I only go via Keyhole.
The real trick to climbing Longs Peak is to really know the weather. From where I live I can see how the clouds are developing so I can see when the cloud development is low or coming late in the day. Pick a day with low humidity and no fronts crossing.
It takes 3 1/2 hours each way at full speed and no stops. Leaving at 3am is too early for me. 4-5 is very good as there is some light on the trail and light is good!
The main problem with the weather on Longs is that the weather is coming from the SW normally while the hikers are coming from the NE so the hikers can't see the weather heading their way. There is virtually no cover from lightning or rain so if you arrive at the Keyhole and discover seriously bad weather about to hit it takes at least an hour of running down the trail to get to any cover even minimal. At 20-30mph the weather will be on the hikers before they make it to cover. So, hypothermia while avoiding lightning strikes (only prayer works at that point) makes for a memorable hike.
The trick, pick a day when the weather is predicable and favorable.
Pat
