Peter,

Look at the Database space - SQL is a nice database but it still hasn't put away Oracle or DB2. Can anyone say with a straight face that SQL is clearly the better choice? Only if you are developing for a Win32 solution.

I might be confused but are you referring to SQL as a database structure or SQL Server the MSFT product? If it is the former then a clarification is required. SQL is not a database structure. It is simply a language / interface into most database structures (b-tree, relational, etc.) for extracting and writing data.

Oracle and DB2 both can be interfaced via SQL. In fact, even NOVL's commonly used B-Trieve database (based on B-Tree) had an SQL interface. MSFT's own SQL Server software does not refer to the database structure since I believe MSFT SQL Server is relational (an off-chute of SyBase's structure).

Another perfect example is that of LDAP. It is not an underlying directory structure, but rather, it is simply a directory oriented communication protocol.

But, if you meant SQL Server the MSFT product then I do understand your point (I think this is what you meant). You are correct in that "almost" will not be good enough when the "suckers" that first try to migrate to AD in a widely distributed network realize MSFT's limitations. AD's own limitations will be NOVL's best friend.
