Christine, I agree that genetically engineered corn should be labeled for those who don't want it. I agree with those who say that great care must be used when engineering crops. I don't agree that it should be totally stopped. Virtually all plants in natural world put out toxins to as a defense against being eaten. An example is milkweed, which is toxic to most larvae, but to which monarch butterflies have evolved a counter defense. There is a continuous battle in nature between the eaten and the eaters, with the eaten coming up with random mutations to poison the bugs chewing on them, and the bugs evolving counter defenses. Those doing genetic engineering are trying to understand this process and use it to their advantage. Properly done, it may be possible to use far fewer insecticides to protect the crops, and less fuel to control weeds. We cannot feed the present population by killing the bugs with fly swatters. After all of these years, is there any good evidence that those eating organic food live longer than those who don't? Del
