Re : mayonnaise -- despite years of thinking (Best Foods) Hellmans brand is indeed excellent (and despite having enough money to be able to afford Hellmans), I recently "dared" to try some generic mayonnaise (Publix's own brand) (Publix is a big grocery store chain here in Florida). To my amazement -- I think the Publix stuff is identical to Hellmans. Upon closer scrutiny -- the label on the Publix jar says "distributed by Publix," implying it might just be Hellmans in a different jar. There was a cover story in Forbes magazine several years ago about "the end of an era" (my choice of words, not Forbes') for over-priced, well-known consumer brands. (The words on the cover were : "Hell no, we won't pay !") I remember reading the article and thinking : this is obvious; I wonder when (the "great") Warren Buffett is going to get hosed with his over-weighting in so many company's stocks whose products are grossly over-priced, and almost totally boycotted by me (and more and more people daily). I guess it may finally have started this past year ... Jon.
